Are anti-ganglioside antibodies associated with proventricular dilatation disease in birds?
The identification of Parrot bornaviruses (PaBV) in psittacine birds with proventricular dilatation disease (PDD) has not been sufficient to explain the pathogenesis of this fatal disease, since not all infected birds develop clinical signs. Although the most accepted theory indicates that PaBV directly triggers an inflammatory response in this disease, another hypothesis suggests the disease i...
متن کاملNovel Borna Virus in Psittacine Birds with Proventricular Dilatation Disease
Pyrosequencing of cDNA from brains of parrots with proventricular dilatation disease (PDD), an unexplained fatal inflammatory central, autonomic, and peripheral nervous system disease, showed 2 strains of a novel Borna virus. Real-time PCR confirmed virus presence in brain, proventriculus, and adrenal gland of 3 birds with PDD but not in 4 unaffected birds.
متن کاملAvian Bornaviruses in Psittacine Birds from Europe and Australia with Proventricular Dilatation Disease
To determine whether avian bornaviruses (ABVs) were a factor in proventricular dilatation disease (PDD), we used immunohistochemistry, reverse transcription-PCR, and nucleotide sequence analysis to examine paraffin wax-embedded or frozen tissue samples of 31 psittacine birds with this disease. PDD is a fatal disease of psittacine birds associated with nonsuppurative encephalitis and ganglioneur...
متن کاملGanglioside reactive antibodies in the neuropathy associated with celiac disease.
We tested patients with celiac disease (CD) for the presence of serum anti-ganglioside antibodies. Six of twenty-seven patient sera were reactive against brain gangliosides by an agglutination immunoassay. Neurological examination in all six revealed the presence of distal sensory loss, consistent with the diagnosis of peripheral neuropathy. When tested by ELISA for antibodies to isolated GM1, ...
